Armagh Bisons vs Newry Fliers
Newry Fliers had their first away match of the new season. Coming off the back of two previous wins already this season, Newry wanted to build on this and continue the success going away from home for the first time. Having played the Bisons in previous seasons, the senior men knew it would be a physical match; on a court that didn’t suit the play style of Newry Basketball. From the outset it was clear the opposition had strong outside shooting ability, making it difficult to defend. Early scores from big men Declan Mathers and Niall Byrne did little but hold the score line to a 10 point differential in Bisons favour at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter posed the same problems as the first for the senior men. Coach Sean Brady changed from a zone to man defence to try and counter the strong shooting from the Armagh seniors. However the three-point shooting did not slow up, ending in a half time score of 54-36.
The second half saw better offence from Newry, led by Paul Crawly and Ryan Lennon, not allowing the Bisons to further extend the lead. With the 3rd quarter ending 79-57. As legs were tiring in the last quarter, good defence from Michael Walsh and Declan McGreevy was to no avail, with the final score being 103-81. Despite a disappointing result in a high scoring game; Newry fliers will get back to winning ways in their further fixtures. (Game Report Ben Crozier)
