Thunder Strikes Again
Omagh Thunder vs Newry Fliers
Newry Fliers faced an opening day road trip to Omagh Thunder as the season kicked off. A tough opponent in the past, this game was to prove similar. Thunder started in the front foot, nailing two 3 pointers. A couple of free throws from Mathers and Gorman remained Newry’s only reply. Things didn’t get much better for the Fliers. Points from Aaron Miller and subsequent man of the match Paul Crawley were out done by a powerful inside game delivered fiercely by the Thunder. Newry dusted themselves off and Coach Brady shook things up with the start line up. Father son duo Gavin and Cillian Cumisky delivered on both ends of the court, their powerful defensive work steadying the ship for Newry and reducing the offence of the home team. The fourth quarter proved to be Newry’s best. Offensively the work of young guns Niall Brady and Aaron O’Reilly reduced the lead of the thunder. On the other end of the court returning veteran Eugene Boyle delivered heavily on rebounds, keeping Omagh at bay. Newry Captain Paul Crawley saw out the fourth quarter with eight unanswered points of his own but it was in vain as Omagh saw out their lead for the win.
